I'm a fan of point and click games, as well as Sherlock Holmes, but this game was an absolute chore to get through. The story didn't flow right, the mechanics were clunky, and the puzzles were either unintuitive or too easy.. I bought this game on Steam after recalling it from many years ago, so it was, to some extent, bought to appease my nostalgia. I remembered correctly that the game could be difficult at times. However, if you have a walkthrough at hand to give you a hand (should you find yourself having overlooked some miniscule detail), the game should be fairly easy to traverse and take about seven hours to complete. However, I think that while $10USD could usually be considered a reasonable price for 7 hours of entertainment, in the case of a game that is 14 years old, I think $5USD seems a more justifiable figure, so it's best you buy this on sale. Besides those points, the game itself is excellent. The story is very compelling (based on a novel, in fact), and if you are someone who likes to consider the details and likes some intellectual stimulus, this game has a lot of it. The characters all have.. character, with some quality voice acting (except for that one kid who is voiced by an adult..). The game has some beautiful music - though not enough of it, and you'll hear the same pieces many times. The set pieces are quite good for their time and still adequate today, however you'll find some glitching of character placement onscreen if playing on a widescreen monitor, as the game wasn't made with playing on one in mind. Also bear in mind that while this story technically has a happy ending in that everything is resolved and the evil ones are given justice, there is some gruesome backstory and there are many innocent and not-so-innocent people who get killed. It's an intellectually stimulating story; but despite that, murder remains murder, and this won't be something to help you sleep at night. There are several extremely ugly sides of human nature shown in this game. Overall, I recommend this game, but bear in mind that it can be difficult (have a walkthrough handy), visually slightly glitchy on widescreen, and actually very sad.EDIT: Having read some other reviews, I would like to clarify some points.Firstly, since I had some prior experience of the game (though never having completed it), my playtime may be less than expected. Maybe 10-15 hours is a more realistic figure. The quoted 25 hours on the story page is difficult to believe, unless you really take your time. Secondly, the puzzles in this game are logical and sufficient clues are (almost) always about somewhere. I would still recommend a walkthrough, as some details are easily overlooked (a footprint here or there, in particular, though the quizzes tended to have a question or two that I might get wrong, too), and sometimes spending too much time trying to figure out a puzzle is just a waste of time. Does having to sometimes rely on a walkthrough this mean the game was badly designed to begin with? Perhaps. Does it mean it isn't worth playing? Not really. You should still be able to complete 95% of the game by yourself. Thirdly, I found the UI perfectly usable, though I agree that movement is awfully clunky.. Fairly standard point and click adventure game, for what it's worth. Doesn't quite capture the feeling of discovery and accomplishment that comes from putting things together. As it is, Holmes is always one step ahead of the player--which can still make for a great story, but it doesn't really let you have the experience of playing as the great Sherlock Holmes. Fun enough, and worth a playthrough, but between taking what ends up feeling like a very passive role in the story and some quirks of gameplay that end up being rather annoying--particularly in those sections of the game requiring precise timing--it's all a bit of a let down at the end.. The game itself is good, the last part of the end mission is bugged. Impossible to get through it, i looked up on youtube a walk through and more had the same problem. Im talking about the dog part of the last mission, totally impossible to get past... But other than that, its as good as the other newer Sherlock Holmes games.. HORRIBLE game play!!!! Hand doesn't even click on the area you have selected. Had sherlock stuck in a room for 15 minutes trying to get him to open the door and leave and couldn't. The angles are horrible, you walk to corners and can't get out. If the game was created to irritate and anger you it does a very good job. I have played this game and the mystery of the mummy. They both seem like bad knock offs of the classic Electronic Arts Sherlock Holmes games. I have purchased the rest of the set from Frogwares I would hope that at least one will be worth the money spent....The jury is still out, moving to the next game in the series.. I am no Sherlock Holmes !This is one of the earliest games in Sherlock Holmes series by Frogwares, and it shows its age.Positive+ It's a Sherlock Holmes gameNegative- Story is overcomplicated, too many things, too many people, too many clues. And the game doesn't have a good system to track everything together.- Gameplay elements are inconsistent. Sometimes actions require you to click on an object in the gameworld, sometimes you need to click the same object in inventory, or drag-and-drop two objects on top of each other, sometimes you need to use magnifying glass, sometimes you don't. It's a bit confusing.- Crashes - There are few places that cause the game to crash consistently, loosing all your progress since the last save.- Spot the dot - In some areas you literally need to find one small spec in one big room. - Font in messages\/books is unreadable ! Overall, there isn't really anything special about this, I would suggest trying newer games in the series, they are much more streamlined.. I love me some detective adventure games where you got to gather clues and interrogate people. Games such as Discworld Noir and Under A Killing Moon do it really well and it's kinda sad that so few games in the genre exist. The Silver Earring is another of these games which does not rely upon "use item X with item Y" puzzles but rather on cross-examination, investigation and tying elements together. It doesn't do it as well as the above-mentioned examples, however. In most areas the games is quite adequate but never more than that, and in some areas the game is rather poor. Here's a list of PRO's and CON's:PRO- The game keeps track of everything you collect & where you collected it in list-form. Same with dialogs and letters and other evidence. Very tidy and handy- the Quiz between chapters is pretty well done and forces you to think for yourself- the backdrops are pretty well designed- the game has a nice attention to detail in true Sherlock Holmes fashion- the murder mystery is actually quite engagingCON- the dialog is very hit & miss - some parts are simply poorly written while others are quite convincing. The voice actors are mostly average at best- the characters you meet are not that interesting or simply break immersion by being unbelievable (the drunks outside for example)- the interface is a bit of a chore to say the least.- sometimes the game will let you "use" an object through dialog and sometimes you got to drag it onto a person - the game is very inconcistent like that. Since you pick up loads of items, this can be very tedious if you get stuck- the game heavily relies on linearity - you need to find every single clue before it will continue which can be infuriating. A walkthrough is a must if you want to enjoy the game!- the music is not very appropriate a lot of the time and harms the immersion.- the Quiz requires every single answer to be correct and in two instances, I found that the question was confusing so I had to cheat.- Holmes is even more of a jerk than the books make him out to be - he's plainly rude half the time.Do I recommend this game? Just about but barely and only with a walkthrough. If you love murder mysteries, this is still a nice game if you can forgive its flaws ... .. Honestly, the graphical errors and such are things that I expected when playing an old games. There were many times where strange overlaps would occur and break the game, so I had to reopen-- even after adjusting the resolution and other display settings as seen recommended in forums. If you play this, for the love of god, save often.I should clarify I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes in literature. Some of the games definitely deliver in this category. My favorite remains Crimes & Punishments, which is both intuitive in control and camera as well as plot development, but still challenging and intriguing. I've trudged through some of the older games, but this one is probably one of my least favorite.Pros: Still the pompous Sherlock you'll find in all games. However, this lacks the charm of his absolute lack of self-preservation that other games will happily highlight for you-- imo, one of his bigger charms. Banter between him and the cops is troll as always. Overlooking random visual glitches, the cutscenes aren't so bad for a 14 year old game.Cons: Navigation is a headache, a trait of old clickers, unfortunately. A map is provided for some locations, but there is no indication of your own position in it, and the whirling camera angles make it pretty hard to deduce on your own. There is a lot of being tugged around in many directions, without a lot of evidence that ever begins to lean somewhere. A lot of useless filler information. Some of the puzzles genuinely made me curse aloud. Not because of difficulty, but because of genuine absurdity. If the overwhelming portion of players for your game admit to relying on a walkthrough, the issue is with the design, not the player. Puzzles should provide some level of intuitive hint or structure. Simple actions are made complicated due to literally no explanation or reason. I spent three minutes trying to stick something in g*ddamn water because it is not expressed to you that you need to heat the water first. I would never guess I have to heat water up to put soap in it. WHY, lmao? Progression makes no sense and involves a lot of redundant pathing. You can literally be the only person navigating a location, but after finding one clue, all the sudden like 6 more objects that are very visually obvious appear, rather than having existing objects gain meaning. What? How does that make sense at all? Who is walking around dropping things while you sift through papers? Minor complaint that visuals will de-sync, and certain voice actors are 3x louder than others. All-in-all, there's definitely a better detective-style game out there.. Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring was overall a very enjoyable puzzle adventure game. The game begins with the death of a wealthy businessman and leaves you to investigate the scene. The game will then take you to multiple connected locations as you attempts to piece together the murder and uncover the assassin and the motive for the murder. The game is set over 5 days of investigations and each day will have you visit a location and search it for clues and solve one or two puzzles with ranging difficulties (some puzzles were quite hard and confusing), at the end of each day you will summarise your findings in a quiz, which for me was probably the hardest part of the game. I found the story to be quite engaging and interesting overall with a good range of characters and locations and was well suited to a Sherlock story. Overall 'Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring' was a good solid adventure game which presented a well written story and some good puzzles, taking around 9 - 10 hours to complete and with a very conclusive ending I would highly recommend it for adventure game enthusiasts. 8.5\/10
